1865 ROMANIA (Tulcea) - The Danube Delta Traditions

As might be expected, the main occupation of the inhabitants of the Danube Delta, be they Romanians, Lipovans or Hahols (Ukrainians - descendents of Zaporozhian Cossacks), is fishing, which provides the main source of food and income. However is not neglected the animal breeding (mainly pigs and cows), which is made there in a special way: the animals are let loose on the grinduri (oblong strip of land formed from alluvial deposits), where they seeks the food.

Lack of agricultural lands leads locals to keep in stables only animals for traction and rarely some cattle, the rest being brought into households just before slaughter. It became famous the case of the feral horses from Letea Forest, banished by the owners because they had nothing to feed them. But the number of cows far exceeds the one of horses, and didn't finds cow without owner, even if they can stay in the field or in the woods for weeks.
